Although GPS systems are increasingly becoming a driver's best friend, James Firth of the Freight Transport Association (FTA) says lorry drivers do not feel that SatNav caters to their needs, and yet it's this segment that could potentially have the most at stake in its future. Among the issues is the lack of input from local authorities, which, along with several other grievances, has prompted FTA to consult with leading SatNav companies to produce units more commercially sound.

"Units which lend a greater bias to major roads and, further down the line, offer preferred freight routes as identified by local authorities in consultation with the freight industry are what we must all be aiming for," says Firth in reference to one of the major areas currently being addressed by FTA.
