With the support of innovative leadership, Gundersen Lutheran launched the Envision program in 2007 to streamline energy, waste and recycling efforts and explore sustainable design. Out of this program sparked an aggressive environmental strategy to become completely energy-independent by 2014.

We also spoke with Phil Williams, vice president of sustainability and technical systems for Webcor, the builder responsible for the new San Francisco General Hospital. Though the city requires all of its new buildings to meet the requirements for LEED Silver, the project team intends to seek LEED gold when the facility is completed. The hospital will tout several green features including natural ventilation, rainwater reclamation and low-VOC products.
